Addiction is like a black hole. It pulls in everything good and only leaves feelings of hopelessness and loneliness. Like a void growing larger and larger, the struggle of overcoming a substance use
disorder can feel like an impossible task to achieve.

It’s hard to say how your addiction grew to such proportions. It started as a recreational habit, helping you unwind after a hard day or loosen up in social circles. Over time, this seemingly harmless habit evolved into something more dark and sinister. And this is difficult to face when dealing with an addiction as a Christian.

At this point, you may feel as if all hope is lost. The walls are closing in around you, leaving no options other than to perpetuate the vicious addictive cycle.

You might think that God has forsaken you, withdrawn all support and left you to fend for yourself. But this could not be further from the truth. We are going to see how to overcome addiction biblically.

Psalm 50:15 reminds us that God asks us to call on Him in our times of trouble.

He promises to deliver us from the darkness of our sinful decisions and forgive our transgressions. All we need to do is ask and He will be there for us. Taking refuge in His loving embrace can be your greatest source of strength.

How to Overcome Addiction through God

God’s love provides us the ability to overcome the most powerful addictions and achieve sustained sobriety and personal success. In turning to God to overcome your addiction, you must remember that:

God’s Love is Amazing

While your addiction has made you feel worthless at times, you must remember that God sees through your faults and loves the person you are.

Psalm 46:1 reminds us that God is our shelter and strength, always there to help in times of trouble.

He does not expect his children to be perfect. He simply wants you to remain persistent toward overcoming your sins and constantly strive toward his everlasting love. Learning to manage your addiction will take effort and sacrifice. It will require you to admit your shortcomings and push toward something stronger than yourself.

Holding on to God’s hand during this storm can provide a stabilizing force capable of withstanding any temptation. You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you, including overcoming substance addiction. This is key in dealing with an addiction as a Christian.

God Wants Us to Experience Trials Because It’s How We Grow

Learning to overcome difficult moments in life is the primary method we grow both emotionally and spiritually.

James 1:2-4 emphasizes this fact and reminds us to find joy in tumultuous life experiences.

It states: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

Examples of God Helping Drug Addiction

Dealing with addiction can drain you of your strength and cause you to wonder what you’ve done to deserve such punishment. Fact is, God does not promise that you will never stumble and fall. On the contrary, He stresses that everyone will face trials and tribulations through those darkest hours. He will guide your steps with these promises:

2 Corinthians 12:9 – God tells you that his strength is all you need because His power is greatest when you are weak. When you are facing an addiction that makes you feel feeble and defeated, remember God is your strength and there to carry you through those moments.

Psalm 91:1-2 – God promises that when you run to Him for safety, He will protect you. He is your defender that can help you defeat all things, including the addiction, that have plagued you for so long.

John 15:4-5 – God is there to remind his children that their strength and power is derived from His strength and power. He states, “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” He does not care that we are all imperfect creatures. He embraces our faults and encourages everyone to use those faults to draw closer to him.

No person is alone in this life if they call to the Lord and ask for His love and guidance. He promises to support his children and deliver them from all the obstacles that aim to defeat them.

Your addiction is an obstacle, not a brick wall. It is a bump in the road, not the end of your journey. God loves you no matter what you do, even through your addiction. Call out to Him and He shall be there for you.
