The fluctuations of addiction can be dizzying, pushing you to soaring highs right before the bottom drops out. When you hit the ground, you’re left to crawl out of the hole you’ve created.
How do you fight the urge to continue using? Your substance of choice has helped you get through so many difficult days and even seemed like a savior.
But facts quickly overtake the fiction of your substance use disorder, and the drug that once appeared to be giving you hope transformed back into the real disease it’s always been.
Once you’ve made the decision to fight against your addiction, how do you maintain that momentum? How do you fight off the maladaptive urges that have controlled your life for so long?
Faith and Addiction
Learning to rely on the power and grace of God can be your sanctuary through the storm. He can provide you with the strength necessary to battle your addiction and overcome the disorder that has held you in its grip. But first, you must place your faith in Him.
Realize that, on your own, this addiction will continue to spread throughout your being until all that is left is a shell of your former self. Finding hope in your faith, God is the first pivotal step toward sustained sobriety.
Christians and Addiction: God’s Promises to Help You Sustain Sobriety
God does not expect you to be perfect. Instead, He longs to be completely let into your life so He can help you sustain your whole being. By embracing these central truths, you can rely on your Christian faith to help you prevent relapse.
You Were Created in His Image
Everyone has sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. The fact that your addiction has rooted itself in your life and thrown you off course does not mean that you are permanently lost. It simply means that you forgot who you truly are and the potential you’ve yet to achieve.
God created you in His image and cares for you deeply, enough to count every single strand of hair on your head and promise His enduring love regardless of your transgressions. Take the time to reestablish your relationship with God. A newfound connection can help you realize his boundless forgiveness and realize that His love conquers all things in this world.
He Promises to Hear Your Call
Your struggles with addiction have pushed you to your limits and left you feeling alone, as if everyone around you has left you to your own devices. After all, that’s what the disease of addiction wants you to believe; it flourishes off your hopelessness and misery.
However, when you place your faith in God, you are never alone.
Psalm 3:3-6 states, “But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high. I call out to the Lord, and he answers me from his holy mountain. I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.”
No matter how isolated you may feel throughout the curse of your addiction, the Lord will never leave your side. He will embrace you when you feel lost and sustain you when you feel as if you can’t go on.
His Love Conquers All
Using your faith to maintain your sobriety and avoid relapse can be a difficult task. After all, you have spent so much time fostering and feeding your addiction that once you attempt to change those deep-seeded habits, your mind, body, and soul will instinctively fight to keep your addiction alive.
This is why relying on God’s love and guidance is essential to establishing and maintaining a secure and sober life. You may feel as if you are not worthy of His grace, or as if your sins are too great and He could never look past the transgressions you’ve committed.
Fortunately, this could not be farther from the truth.
Psalm 86:15 states “But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.”
He loves every part of you, including your failures, faults, and the devotion you display when you have nothing left to give. God is good, all the time, and He will be always provide refuge for those brave enough to place their faith in Him.
Christians and Relapse
Conquering your addiction and avoiding a relapse is no simple task. It will require steadfast conviction and a commitment to the recovery process. It will take a supreme effort, a willingness to admit your faults, and a desire to learn from your past mistakes.
Achieving this goal could be the most important moment in your life, and God is there to provide you with the necessary strength and love to triumph over addiction.
Call out to Him, embrace the love that He promises, and find peace in knowing that through Christ, all things are possible.
