Why Some Californians Leave Home for Treatment

Addiction is tied to places and routines. It may be the liquor store on your way home, the friend who always has something or the number still saved in your phone. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) explains that addiction changes the brain’s reward and stress systems. Familiar cues can set off strong cravings even when you truly want to stop.

Physical distance from those cues gives you room to breathe. When the people and places tied to using are a few hours away, walking out of treatment on a bad night gets harder. Your energy can go into the work in front of you. Distance also brings privacy, since you are far less likely to run into a coworker or neighbor.

Distance alone does not fix addiction. Treatment does that work, along with the habits and support you build along the way. A setting away from daily stress simply makes that work easier to start. Because you are still in California, home is a drive or a short flight away when it is time to return.

What Faith-Integrated Clinical Care Means

You may worry that a Christian program means prayer in place of real treatment. That is not how we work. Faith is one part of care here. The other part is clinical treatment for addiction and the mental health conditions that often come with it, provided by our clinical team.

On the clinical side, care includes dual diagnosis treatment, psychiatric treatment, medication management and individual psychotherapy. Dual diagnosis means someone has a substance use problem and a mental health condition at the same time, such as depression, anxiety or the effects of trauma. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) notes that these conditions often occur together and are best treated together.

On the faith side, our Christian program connects the 12 Steps to their biblical roots. Many people in recovery carry shame, broken relationships and a sense that God is far away. Here, you can bring those questions into your recovery instead of leaving them at the door.

A Faith-Based Track and a Traditional Track

People arrive at very different places in their faith. Some have walked with Christ for years. Others grew up in church and drifted away, and some are not sure what they believe. We offer two program tracks so you can choose the one that feels right for your recovery.

The faith-based track is Christ-centered addiction treatment that joins faith-based healing with evidence-based care. The traditional 12-Step addiction treatment track gives you the support and structure of the 12 Steps with a different focus.

If you are unsure which track to choose, that is fine. You can call our admissions team and talk through both before you make any decision.

Levels of Care From Detox to Aftercare

The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) describes addiction care as a range of levels. Treatment is usually more intensive at the start and steps down as you get stronger. We offer several levels of care, so you can keep moving forward without starting over somewhere new:

  • Detox
  • Residential inpatient treatment
  • Day treatment
  • Transitional care
  • Intensive outpatient
  • Aftercare

For many people, detox is the first step. Withdrawal from some substances, especially alcohol and benzodiazepines, can be dangerous. Please don’t try to stop those suddenly on your own. Detox helps your body clear the substance with support, so you can take part in therapy with a clearer head.

Residential treatment means you live at the facility while you receive care. Day treatment, transitional care and intensive outpatient then add more independence one step at a time. You can see how these pieces fit together on our Covenant Hills treatment program page.

What Treatment Involves Week to Week

In individual psychotherapy, you meet one on one with a clinician to look at what has driven your substance use. That may include stress, grief, trauma or patterns you learned growing up. If you also live with a mental health condition, psychiatric treatment and medication management can be part of your care.

Step work helps you face addiction honestly and rebuild your life one step at a time. Relapse prevention helps you understand your triggers and plan ahead for hard moments. On the faith-based track, this work is grounded in a Christian understanding of the 12 Steps.

Schedules differ by level of care and track. Ask our admissions team what an actual day looks like before you arrive, so there are fewer surprises.

Separate Programs for Men and Women

Addiction can reach anyone, but many of the issues underneath it are different for men and women. That is why we offer gender-separate men’s and women’s treatment.

Gender-specific care can lead to stronger, more appropriate relationships with others in the program. It also removes romantic distractions and makes room for more open conversation. Men and women can each focus on the issues that matter most to them, alongside people who understand.

Does Insurance Cover Christian Drug Rehab in California?

A program’s Christian focus does not usually change how insurance treats it. Plans generally look at two things: whether the care is medically necessary and whether the provider is in network. Covenant Hills is in network with several insurance carriers. Call us to find out whether your plan is one of them.

The kind of plan you have matters, especially if you live outside Orange County. PPO plans usually let you see providers across a wider area, and some cover out-of-network care. HMO and EPO plans are stricter. They often limit coverage to a set network or region. Not sure which you have? Your insurance card or your employer’s benefits contact can tell you.

Your out-of-pocket cost depends on several things. These include the level of care you need, how long you stay, your deductible and your plan’s out-of-pocket maximum. Federal parity law requires many health plans to cover substance use treatment on terms comparable to other medical care. Your exact benefits still vary by plan, so confirm them before you commit.

How to Get Started When You Live Farther Away

Getting started begins with a phone call. When you or a family member calls, it helps to have a few details ready. These include what substances are involved, how recently they were used, any physical health concerns and any mental health concerns. This information helps decide which level of care makes sense first, including whether detox should come before anything else.

Keep your insurance card nearby when you call. Write down any questions about the program, the two tracks or travel, so you don’t forget them in the moment.

Getting here looks a little different depending on where you live:

  • From Los Angeles or the Inland Empire, most families drive.
  • From San Diego, it is a drive north.
  • From Northern California, many people fly into a Southern California airport.

Whatever the route, it helps to have a sober friend or family member travel with you. If you are in active withdrawal, please don’t drive yourself.

What to Bring for Your Stay

Packing is one less thing to worry about if you plan ahead. Ask our admissions team for the official list, including anything that is not allowed. In general, people traveling for treatment find these items helpful:

  • A photo ID and your insurance card
  • Current prescription medications in their original bottles
  • Comfortable, everyday clothes
  • A Bible or devotional, if you have one you love
  • Phone numbers for the people you will want to stay in touch with

It also helps to handle a few things before you leave. That may mean talking with your employer about time off, arranging bill payments and setting up care for pets or children. When those details are covered, it is easier to give your attention to recovery.

Going Home After Treatment

When you travel for treatment, planning for the return home matters as much as the stay itself. Aftercare and relapse prevention help you leave with a plan for the first weeks and months. That plan can include outpatient care, 12-Step meetings and church-based recovery support closer to where you live.

You may not feel ready to go straight home, and that’s okay. Stepping down into transitional care or intensive outpatient gives you more time to practice new habits with support close by. A stay in a sober living home before returning to daily life is another option to talk through with your care team.

NIDA describes addiction as a chronic condition that can be treated, much like other long-term health problems. A setback after treatment does not mean you failed. It means your plan may need adjusting, and you can reach out again at any point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be a Christian to come to Covenant Hills?

We offer both a faith-based Christian track and a traditional 12-Step track. You can choose the Christ-centered approach if it fits your beliefs, or the traditional track if you would prefer a different focus. Our admissions team can help you decide.

Is faith-based drug rehab real clinical treatment?

Yes. Faith is part of our approach, but it does not replace clinical care. Our services include individual psychotherapy, dual diagnosis care, psychiatric treatment and medication management, delivered by our clinical team.

Will my California insurance plan work if I live outside Orange County?

It depends on your plan. The type of plan you have, such as PPO or HMO, often matters more than where you live. Call our admissions team or your insurer to confirm your coverage before you travel.

Do you treat alcohol addiction as well as drug addiction?

Yes. We provide care for alcoholism and drug addiction. When you call, share everything you have been using so we can talk about the right starting point.

Can I start with detox?

Detox is one of our levels of care. If you have been drinking heavily or using drugs that cause withdrawal, starting with detox can help you get through that phase more safely before therapy begins.

Who does the program serve?

We work with adults facing addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions. Men and women receive care in separate, gender-specific programs.

How long will I stay?

Length of stay depends on your needs, your progress and your insurance coverage. Ask our admissions team what a typical stay might look like for your situation.
